Welcome to the Mount Desert Cemeteries web site. The purpose of this site is to provide basic cemetery information and pertinent notes so individual researchers will not have to “reinvent the wheel” by tracking down the same material that others have already found.

A little work by each of us will save a lot of work for all of us.
Below is an alphabetical list of Mount Desert’s cemeteries. Click on any name and you will be taken to an entry for that cemetery.
Atherton and Mikhalapov Graves (graves in 2011)
Location. Set back from east side of Beech Hill Road. UTM: 19T 0551941, 4908769; Lat./Long.: N 44°19′49.2″ x W 68°20′54.7″
Directions. From the intersection of Routes 3 and 102/198 at the north end of Mount Desert Island (just after you cross the bridge from Thompson Island), go straight ahead (south) onto Routes 102/198. In approximately 5.2 miles (and at the south end of the village of Somesville), turn right onto Pretty Marsh Road (Route 102). In about 0.2–0.3 miles turn left onto Beech Hill Road. (Note: this turn is easy to pass as it is just over a hill and in a curve.) In 1.9–2.0 miles, the stones are on the left near the trunks of three tall trees (two spruce and one birch).

Bartlett Island Cemetery 1
Location. North end of Bartlett Island.
Directions. From the boat landing on the east side of the island, follow the road for approximately 0.6 miles to a T-intersection. Turn right, and follow this road for approximately 1.4 miles to the entrance of a very large pasture. The cemetery is in the northwest portion of this pasture.

Bartlett Island Cemetery 2
Location. East of north-south road and west of Great Cove, Bartlett Island.
Directions. From the boat landing on the east side of the island, follow the road for approximately 0.6 miles to a T-intersection. Turn right, and the cemetery is set back from the right side of the road in about 0.3 miles. Follow an old road for approximately 100 feet to a trail on the right. Turn onto that trail, and the single grave is on the left in about 25 feet.

Bartlett Island Cemetery 3
Location. East of north-south road and west of Great Cove, Bartlett Island.
Directions. From the boat landing on the east side of the island, follow the road for approximately 0.6 miles to a T-intersection. Turn right, and the cemetery is set back from the right side of the road in approximately 0.3 miles. Follow an old road for approximately 100 feet to a trail on the right that leads to the cemetery.

Bartlett Island Cemetery 4
Location. Northwest of and visible from the boat landing, Bartlett Island.
Directions. From the boat landing on the east side of the island, follow the road for approximately 0.2 miles, and the cemetery is on the right.

Bartlett Island Cemetery 5
Location. Southwest portion of Bartlett Island, between Alleys Point and Seal Cove.
Directions. From the boat landing on the east side of the island, follow the road for approximately 0.6 miles to the T-intersection. Turn left and follow this road about 0.5 miles to a fork. Bear left and follow this road approximately 0.5 miles to the edge of a field. The tops of a few broad-leaved trees that are in the cemetery can be seen ahead and a little to the left.

Bartlett Island Cemetery 6
Location. South end of Bartlett Island.
Directions. From the boat landing on the east side of the island, follow the road for 0.4–0.5 miles to the first road on the left. Turn left and follow this road to the end. A trail leading approximately 100 feet to the cemetery is on the right.

Blanchard Family Burial Ground (burial ground in 2011)
Location. Set back from Blanchard Road. UTM: 19T 0551469, 4909868; Lat./Long.: N 44°20′24.9″ x W 68°21′15.6″
Directions. From the intersection of Routes 3 and 102/198 at the north end of Mount Desert Island (just after you cross the bridge from Thompson Island), go straight ahead (south) onto Routes 102/198. In approximately 5.2 miles (and at the south end of the village of Somesville), turn right onto Pretty Marsh Road (Route 102). In 0.2–0.3 miles, turn left onto Beech Hill Road. (Note: this turn is easy to pass as it is just over a hill and in a curve.) Follow Beech Hill Road for 1.1–1.2 miles to the intersection (on the right) with Blanchard Road. Turn right onto Blanchard Road, and in less than 0.1 miles on the left is a field with a mowed path (2000) leading up to the cemetery. The cemetery is not visible from the road.

Brookside Cemetery (entrance sign)
Location. Somesville. UTM: 19T 0552795, 4912268; Lat./Long.: N 44°21′42.4″ x W 68°20′14.8″
Directions. From the intersection of Routes 3 and 102/198 at the north end of Mount Desert Island (just after you cross the bridge from Thompson Island), go straight ahead (south) onto Routes 102/198. In 4.8–4.9 miles (0.5–0.6 miles of which are south of the traffic light at the intersection of Routes 102/198 and 102), turn right onto Brookside Road. This road leads to the cemetery.

Brown Cemetery (cemetery in 2016)
Location. Set back from the east side of Sargent Drive. UTM: 19T 0555690, 4909748; Lat./Long.: N 44°20′19.9″ x W 68°18′05.0″
Directions. From the intersection of Routes 3 and 102/198 at the north end of Mount Desert Island (just after you cross the bridge from Thompson Island), go straight ahead (south) onto Routes 102/198. In 4.2–4.3 miles, at the traffic light at the intersection of Routes 102/198 and 198, turn left on Route 198. Continue about 2.6 miles to the intersection (on the right) with Sargent Drive. Turn right onto Sargent Drive, and the cemetery is on the left in 0.5–0.6 miles.

Carter Cemetery (cemetery in 2008; cemetery in 2013)
Location. In woods east of Beech Hill Road. UTM: 19T 0552508, 4907878; Lat./Long.: N 44°19′20.1″ x W 68°20′29.4″
Directions. From the intersection of Routes 3 and 102/198 at the north end of Mount Desert Island (just after you cross the bridge from Thompson Island), go straight ahead (south) onto Routes 102/198. In approximately 5.2 miles (and at the south end of the village of Somesville), turn right onto Pretty Marsh Road (Route 102). In 0.2–0.3 miles, turn left onto Beech Hill Road. (Note: this turn is easy to pass as it is just over a hill and in a curve.) In approximately 2.6 miles (just before the northern border of Acadia National Park property and just before an intersection on the right with Sand Point Road), there is a stone wall that runs perpendicular to the left (east) side of Beech Hill Road. Follow this stone wall, which is occasionally obscure, to the cemetery. (Near the south side of the wall, there is a ring of rocks around a spring.)

Forest Hill Cemetery (cemetery in 2011)
Location. East of Routes 102/198, Northeast Harbor. UTM: 19T 0557311, 4906737; Lat./Long.: N 44°18′41.9″ x W 68°16′53.0″
Directions. From the intersection of Routes 3 and 102/198 at the north end of Mount Desert Island (just after you cross the bridge from Thompson Island), go straight ahead (south) onto Routes 102/198. In 4.2–4.3 miles, at the traffic light at the intersection of Routes 102/198 and Route 198, turn left on Route 198. Travel 5.2–5.3 miles on Route 198 to the intersection (on the left) with the Gatehouse Road, immediately after (south of) the Brown Mountain gate lodge. Turn left onto this road. Continue straight ahead to the cemetery; do not follow the Gatehouse Road where it turns to the right in less than 0.1 miles.

Hillside Cemetery (cemetery in 2014)
Other name(s). Sound Cemetery.
Location. Along east side of Routes 3/198. UTM: 19T 0555451, 4911956; Lat./Long.: N 44°21′31.5″ x W 68°18′15.0″
Directions. From the intersection of Routes 3 and 102/198 at the north end of Mount Desert Island (just after you cross the bridge from Thompson Island), go straight ahead (south) onto Routes 102/198. In 4.2–4.3 miles, at the traffic light at the intersection of Routes 102/198 and 198, turn left on Route 198. The cemetery is on the left in 1.7.8 miles, of which 0.3–0.4 miles are beyond (south of) the intersection with Route 233 (Eagle Lake Road).

Kenison Cemetery
Location. Set back from south side of Pretty Marsh Road (Route 102). UTM: 19T 0550474, 4911332; Lat./Long.: N 44°21′12.6″ x W 68°22′00.0″
Directions. From the intersection of Routes 3 and 102/198 at the north end of Mount Desert Island (just after you cross the bridge from Thompson Island), go straight ahead (south) onto Routes 102/198. In approximately 5.2 miles (and at the south end of the village of Somesville), turn right onto Pretty Marsh Road. The cemetery is on the left in 1.6–1.7 miles.

Kimball Cemetery (cemetery in 2016)
Location. Kimball Road, Northeast Harbor. UTM: 19T 0556876, 4904367; Lat./Long.: N 44°17′25.2″ x W 68°17′13.6″
Directions. From the intersection of Routes 3 and 102/198 at the north end of Mount Desert Island (just after you cross the bridge from Thompson Island), go straight ahead (south) onto Routes 102/198. In 4.2–4.3 miles, at the traffic light at the intersection of Routes 102/198 and 198, turn left on Route 198. Follow this road for 6.6–6.7 miles to a fork in the road at the south end of the village of Northeast Harbor. Bear left onto Kimball Road, and a path leading to the cemetery is on the right in 0.1–0.2 miles.

Kittredge Tomb
Location. In woods west of Routes 102/198. UTM: 19T 0553177, 4913698; Lat./Long.: N 44°22′28.6″ x W 68°19′57.1″
Directions. From the intersection of Routes 3 and 102/198 at the north end of Mount Desert Island (just after you cross the bridge from Thompson Island), go straight ahead (south) onto Routes 102/198. In 3.8–3.9 miles, the tomb is on the right. Alternatively, the tomb on the left 0.3–0.4 miles north of the traffic light at the intersection of Routes 3/198 and 102/198. It cannot be easily seen from the road.

Oak Hill Road Cemetery (cemetery in 2012)
Location. Along west side of Oak Hill Road, just north of intersection of Oak Hill Road and Whitney Farm Road. UTM: 19T 0550997, 4913386; Lat./Long.: N 44°22′19.0″ x W 68°21′35.7″
Directions. From the intersection of Routes 3 and 102/198 at the north end of Mount Desert Island (just after you cross the bridge from Thompson Island), go straight ahead (south) onto Routes 102/198. In 4.7–4.8 miles (0.5 miles of which are south of the traffic light at the intersection of Routes 198 and 102/198), turn right onto Oak Hill Road. The cemetery is on the left in 1.5–1.6 miles.

Otter Creek Cemetery (cemetery in 2016)
Location. Southeast of Route 3 and just north of entrance to Blackwoods Campground. UTM: 19T 0562861, 4906980; Lat./Long.: N 44°18′48.1″ x W 68°12′42.4″
Directions. From the intersection of Routes 3 and 102/198 at the north end of Mount Desert Island (just after you cross the bridge from Thompson Island), bear left on Route 3. Travel approximately 10.1 miles to a stop sign. Turn left onto Mount Desert Street (Route 3) and continue 0.4–0.5 miles to another stop sign. Turn right at this stop sign, and continue following Route 3. Two driveways leading to the cemetery are on the left in 5.4–5.5 miles.

Pray Cemetery

Directions. From the intersection of Routes 3 and 102/198 at the north end of Mount Desert Island (just after you cross the bridge from Thompson Island), go straight ahead (south) onto Routes 102/198. In approximately 5.2 miles (and at the south end of the village of Somesville), turn right onto Pretty Marsh Road. Travel approximately 3.5 miles to the intersection with Indian Point Road on the right. Turn right onto Indian Point Road and follow it for 0.2–0.3 miles to a three-way stop. Bear left onto Bartlett Landing Road, and the cemetery is on the left in a field in less than 0.1 miles.

Pretty Marsh Cemetery (cemetery in 2011)

From the intersection of Routes 3 and 102/198 at the north end of Mount Desert Island (just after you cross the bridge from Thompson Island), go straight ahead (south) onto Routes 102/198. In approximately 5.2 miles (and at the south end of the village of Somesville), turn right onto Pretty Marsh Road. Travel approximately 3.5 miles to the intersection with Indian Point Road on the right. Turn right onto Indian Point Road and follow it for 0.2–0.3 miles to a three-way stop. Bear left onto Bartlett Landing Road, and the cemetery is on the right in 0.1–0.2 miles.

Richardson Burying Ground (cemetery in 2008)
Location. Along south side of Northwood Lane (private), just west of intersection of Northwood Lane and Beech Hill Road. UTM: 19T 0551566, 4908905; Lat./Long.: N 44°19′53.7″ x W 68°21′11.6″
Directions. From the intersection of Routes 3 and 102/198 at the north end of Mount Desert Island (just after you cross the bridge from Thompson Island), go straight ahead (south) onto Routes 102/198. In approximately 5.2 miles (and at the south end of the village of Somesville), turn right onto Pretty Marsh Road (Route 102). In 0.2–0.3 miles turn left onto Beech Hill Road. (Note: this turn is easy to pass as it is just over a hill and in a curve.). In 1.7–1.8 miles, turn right onto Northwood Lane. The cemetery is on the left in 0.1–0.2 miles.

Savage Burial Ground
Location. South of Route 3, approximately north of Bear Island. UTM: 19T 0558352, 4904368; Lat./Long.: N 44°17′24.8″ x W 68°16′07.0″
Directions. From the intersection of Routes 3 and 102/198 at the north end of Mount Desert Island (just after you cross the bridge from Thompson Island), go straight ahead (south) onto Routes 102/198. In 4.2–4.3 miles, at the traffic light at the intersection of Routes 102/198 and 198, turn left on Route 198. Follow this road for 5.6–5.7 miles to the intersection (on the left) with Route 3. Turn left onto Route 3. In approximately 1.4 miles, the graves are on the right between the road and the water. They are not easily visible from the road.

Seal Harbor Cemetery
Location. West of Jordan Pond Road, Seal Harbor. UTM: 19T 0560151, 4906702; Lat./Long.: N 44°18′39.9″ x W 68°14′44.8″
Directions. From the intersection of Routes 3 and 102/198 at the north end of Mount Desert Island (just after you cross the bridge from Thompson Island), go straight ahead (south) onto Routes 102/198. In 4.2–4.3 miles, at the traffic light at the intersection of Routes 102/198 and 198, turn left on Route 198. Follow this road for 5.6–5.7 miles to the intersection (on the left) with Route 3. Turn left onto Route 3. In approximately 3.0 miles, there is a T-intersection, with a low monument forming an island in the road. Turn left and continue about 0.4 miles where Route 3 bears to the right and Jordan Pond Road is straight ahead. Go straight onto Jordan Pond Road, and the entrance to the cemetery is on the left in 0.6–0.7 miles.

Location. Near east edge of northern portion of Sheep Island (at north end of Somes Sound).

Smallidge Cemetery (cemetery in 2016)
Location. Set back from north side of Sinclair Road, Northeast Harbor. UTM: 19T 0555767, 4905259; Lat./Long.: N 44°17′54.4″ x W 68°18′03.3″
Directions. From the intersection of Routes 3 and 102/198 at the north end of Mount Desert Island (just after you cross the bridge from Thompson Island), go straight ahead (south) onto Routes 102/198. In 4.2–4.3 miles, at the traffic light at the intersection of Routes 102/198 and 198, turn left on Route 198. Travel about 6.5 miles to the village of Northeast Harbor. Turn right onto Summit Road and follow it as it curves to the right. In 0.1–0.2 miles, turn right onto Millbrook Road. Follow this road 0.3–0.4 miles to the intersection (on the left) with Sinclair Road. Turn left onto Sinclair Road, and a path leading to the cemetery is on the right in 0.1–0.2 miles.

Smith Graves

Directions. From the intersection of Routes 3 and 102/198 at the north end of Mount Desert Island (just after you cross the bridge from Thompson Island), go straight ahead (south) onto Routes 102/198. In approximately 5.2 miles (and at the south end of the village of Somesville), turn right onto Pretty Marsh Road. Travel approximately 3.5 miles to the intersection with Indian Point Road on the right. Take Indian Point Road 0.2–0.3 miles to a three-way stop. Bear left onto Bartlett Landing Road, and the single gravestone is on the right in less than 0.1 miles.

Smith-Arnold Cemetery (cemetery in 2008)
Location. Near Deep Cove. UTM: 19T 0548581, 4913065; Lat./Long.: N 44°22′09.2″ x W 68°23′25.0″
Directions. From the intersection of Routes 3 and 102/198 at the north end of Mount Desert Island (just after you cross the bridge from Thompson Island), go straight ahead (south) onto Routes 102/198. In approximately 1.9 miles, turn right onto Indian Point Road. Follow this road for about 3.5 miles to a dip in the road and a private driveway on the right. Follow this drive to an old driveway on the left. Turn onto this old driveway, and the cemetery can be seen on the knoll in front of you.

(Note: this turn is easy to pass as it is just over a hill and in a curve.) The cemetery is on the left in 2.0–2.1 miles.
