(updated 1 May 2013)

Location. Along east side of Beech Hill Road. UTM: 19T 0551988, 4908633. Lat./Long.: N 44°19′44.8″ x W 68°20′52.6″.

Directions. From the intersection of Routes 3 and 102/198 at the north end of Mount Desert Island, go straight ahead (south) onto Routes 102/198. In approximately 5.2 miles (and at the south end of the village of Somesville), turn right onto Pretty Marsh Road (Route 102). In about 0.2–0.3 miles, turn left onto Beech Hill Road. (Note: this turn is easy to pass as it is just over a hill and in a curve.) The cemetery is on the left in approximately 2.0–2.1 miles.

History. Mrs. Seth Thornton (Nellie Rebecca Carroll), in her 1938 book Traditions and Records: Southwest Harbor and Somesville, described this cemetery “on the level plain of Beech Hill” as “a little yard where sleep many of the early pioneers of Mount Desert Island” (p. 235). She called it the “Beech Hill Burying Ground”, but now [2011] a wooden sign fastened to a tree bears the inscription &@8220;Wasgatt / Cemetery / 1840”.

Notes. On 17 May 1999, no stone was found for the “young Swedish man who was drowned in Echo Lake a few years ago and whose antecedents were unknown here”Œ (Thornton, 1938, p. 236). All graves are oriented in a west-east direction, with the head of the grave at the west. This cemetery is not enclosed.

Notes:
1Thornton (1938, p. 236) noted that 1825 was a “the year when the dread disease diphtheria swept over Mount Desert taking heavy toll among little children”.
   2Thornton (1938, p. 236) gave the date of death as 21 March.
3Stone broken. Thornton (1938, p. 236) gave the last name as TUEL. The first three letters on the stone, however, are clearly TUA.
   4Stone worn and cracked.
   5Thornton (1938, p. 235) gave the day as 3 June.
6Metal grave marker with all letters missing.
7A grave with no headstone, but its perimeter outlined by rough stones set into the ground. At this grave is a “G. A. R.” marker [Civil War].
8The diagonal and horizontal strokes of a 4 are not evident, causing this number to appear to be 1. However, the digit is followed by "mo's." implying more than 1. Also, the top of the vertical stroke resembles the top of the 4 in “1845” more than it resembles the top of the 1.
