Welcome to the Mount Desert Island Census Records website. A decennial (i.e., every 10 years) census of the United States was called for in Article 1, Section 2 of the U.S. Constitution as follows: “Representatives and direct Taxes shall be apportioned among the several States which may be included within this Union, according to their respective Numbers, which shall be determined by adding to the whole Number of free Persons, including those bound to Service for a Term of Years, and excluding Indians not taxed, three fifths of all other Persons. The actual Enumeration shall be made within three Years after the first Meeting of the Congress of the United States, and within every subsequent Term of ten Years, in such Manner as they shall by Law direct.”

The purposes of this website are (1) to report which census record(s) (through 1850) should be consulted for the towns of Bar Harbor, Cranberry Isles, Mount Desert, Southwest Harbor, and Tremont, and (2) to provide links to transcripts of those records when available.

You can help by reporting all errors by e-mail to info@vfthomas.com or by traditional mail to the address at the top of this page.

A little work by each of us will save a lot of work for all of us.

aBartlett Island was part of the original town of Mount Desert but was separated from it
(along with a few other islands) to form the town of Seaville. When Seaville was disbanded, Bartlett Island returned to the town of Mount Desert; the other islands became part of Tremont. Therefore, households on the Bartlett Island portion of Mount Desert were included in the 1840 and 1850 censuses of Seaville.
