Notes:
The following surnames have been modified to bring them in line with current spelling: Farrell (from Ferral), Flynn (Flinn), Hodgdon (Hodgden), Kittredge (Kitteridge), Lopaus (Lopez), Moore (Moor), Rafanel (Rufnal), Reed (Read), Richardson (Richison), Robinson (Robison), Smallidge (Smallege), Spurling (Sperling), Stanwood (Stannard), and Tarr (Tar). From some of these variant spellings we might get a hint at how they were (mis)pronounced (e.g., Richison vs. Richardson).
This surname was variously spelled as Sommers (in the 1790 and 1830 censuses of Mount Desert), Summers (Mount Desert 1800, 1810, and 1837), and possibly Somes (Mount Desert 1820). All of these entries were for a person with Thomas as a first name.
The microfilm image of this cell is missing, but based on the column subtotals (not reported in the table above), the value of this cell is 0.
A portion of the page was worn and missing prior to microfilming. See also notes [...] and [...].
Mount Desert town and census records contain references to only four Nathaniels during the late 1700s and early 1800s: Nathaniel Bennett, Nathaniel Davis, Nathaniel Gott, and Nathaniel Marcyes. Full names of Davis and Gott are listed clearly in the 1800 census of Mount Desert, and Marcyes is probably the "Massy" of the 1790 census of Mount Desert and the "Masser" of the 1800 census of Eden. This leaves Nathaniel Bennett as the likely possibility here.
This surname was variously spelled as Groo (in the 1790 census of Mount Desert), le Gros (Mount Desert 1800), Grow (Mount Desert 1800), Legrow (Mount Desert 1810), and Legro (Mount Desert 1820). A gravestone on Spurling Point on Great Cranberry Island bears the name "Jos. L'grow".
Both a "1" and a horizontal mark that appears to cross out that 1 were in the census record.
Column totals are those recorded in the census records. Differences between the sum of the individual cell numbers reported above and the column totals are probably, but not necessarily, due to missing portions of pages. In two cases (males 10–16 and males 26–45) where there are no indications of missing family records, the census record subtotals by page (not reported above) through the end of census page 3 (through family of Alexander Nutter) were each 10 more than the sum of the family numbers for those columns.
There are only 120 families visible on the microfilm copy of the census. Presumably one family is missing due to a damaged manuscript used when microfilming.
