Notes:
The following surnames have been modified to bring them in line with current spelling: Bartlett (from Bartlet), Clement (Clemmons), Crane (Crain), Dawes (Daws), Farrell (Ferrel), Fernald (Fernold), Flye (Fly), Flynn (Flin), Galley (Gally), Gilley (Gilly), Hamblen (Hamlin), Kenison (Kennison), Kittredge (Kittridge), Lopaus (Lopus), Lurvey (Lervy), McKenzie (McKinsay), Milliken (Millikin), Monroe (Munroe), Moore (Moor), Murphy (Murphey), Ober (Over), Peach (Peachey), Rafanel (Rufnell), Remick (Remock), Robbins (Robins), Sawyer (Sawyier), Smallidge (Smiledge), Spurling (Sperlin), and Wasgatt (Wasgat). From some of these variant spellings we might get a hint at how surnames were (mis)pronounced (e.g., Sperlin vs. Spurling).
In the 1810 and 1820 censuses of Mount Desert, there were a William Bray and a John Bray, respectively. In 1830, 1840, and 1850, also for Mount Desert, there were no Brays, but there were a John Bracy and a John Bracy Jr. Research is needed to determine if the earlier Bray and later Bracy surnames belonged to the same lineage.
This name is variously spelled Kelly, Kelley, and Kellay. Some of the spelling variations can likely be attributed to census takers or gravestone cutters. Further study is needed to determine if there were any spelling changes within a particular lineage.
This surname was variously spelled as Groo (in the 1790 census of Mount Desert), le Gros (Mount Desert 1800), Grow (Mount Desert 1800), Legrow (Mount Desert 1810), and Legro (Mount Desert 1820). A gravestone on Spurling Point on Great Cranberry Island bears the name "Jos. L'grow".
Because both Peirce and Pierce are surnames used today, no attempt is made here to sort out which records may be variant spellings.
No gravestones for anyone with the surname Sloper are known for Mount Desert Island, but there stones for persons with the surname Soper.
In the 1820 census of Mount Desert, his name was spelled Truefry, and there was a Lydia B. Truefry, but neither the surname Truefry nor Stewfrie has been found on any gravestone.
There appears to have been no Thomas Summers (or Sommers) in Mount Desert in 1820. There was, however, a Thomas "Somes" in that census of Mount Desert. Because no other reference has been found for any Thomas Somes, and because the age of the senior male in the household of Thomas Somes in 1820 is consistent with the ages of Thomas Summers/Sommers in other censuses, it is possible (probable?) that Thomas Somes of the Mount Desert 1820 census was really the Thomas Summers/Sommers of the other census records.
The census record total for this column was 191. It is possible that the "2" reported for each of the families of Thomas Pierce and David Richardson was written over to be a "1". If so, it was not done convincingly, but it would explain the different column totals.
In the census record, this column was incorrectly added to 64.
