NOT ANY MORE
I am pleased to announce the acquisition of the V. F. Thomas Co. stock of natural history books by The Naturalist's Notebook of Seal Harbor, Maine. Created in 2009 by the wife and husband team of artist/photographer Pamelia Markwood and writer/editor Craig Neff, The Naturalist's Notebook began as a two-story shop and natural history deck, and this summer has expanded into a multichannel enterprise with the addition of a website. I thank all of you who have purchased natural history books and supplies from V. F. Thomas Co. and strongly urge you now to direct your support to The Naturalist's Notebook. That is where I will be buying natural history books and supplies from now on.
Until their website lists the books they carry, I will continue to post book information below, but inquiries and requests should now be directed to The Naturalist's Notebook via e-mail (info@thenaturalistsnotebook.com), telephone (207-801-2777), or traditional mail (P. O. Box 232, 16 Main Street; Seal Harbor, Maine 04675). Also, be sure to read their blog. It is interesting and exceptionally well written.

Colonial Botany: Science, Commerce, and Politics in the Early Modern World Londa Schiebinger and Claudie Swan (editors). "In the early modern world, botany was big science and big business, critical to Europe's national and trade ambitions. Tracing the dynamic relationships among plants, peoples, states, and economies over the course of three centuries, this collection of scholarly essays offers a lively challenge to a historiography that has emphasized the rise of modern botany as a story of taxonomies and 'pure' systems of classification. Charting a new map of botany along colonial coordinates, reaching from Europe to the New World, India, Asia, and other points on the globe, Colonial Botany explores how the study, naming, cultivation, and marketing of rare and beautiful plants resulted from and shaped European voyages, conquests, global trade, and scientific exploration." Dangerous Liaisons? When Cultivated Plants Mate with Their Wild Relatives Norman C. Ellstrand. "With the advent of genetic engineering, 'designer' crops might interbreed with natural populations. Could such romances lead to the evolution of 'superweeds,' as some have suggested? Geneticist Norman C. Ellstrand examines this and other questions, beginning with basic information about the natural hybridization process. He describes what is known about hybridization between the world's most important crops--such as wheat, rice, maize, and soybeans--and their wild relatives. In some cases, crop genes have diluted natural diversity to the point that wild populations of certain rare species were absorbed into the gene pool of the more common crop, bringing the wild species to the brink of extinction." Introduction to Bryophytes Alain Vanderpoorten and Bernard Goffinet. From the authors' preface: "The aim of the present book is to offer a stepping-stone to anyone interested in discovering the fundamentals of the biology of bryophytes. ... The book follows what we consider to be an intuitively natural flow. We focus first on the origin of bryophytes in the context of land plant evolution and on the significance of bryophytes in today's world. The morphological diversity of bryophytes are outlined and their associations with fungi and cyanobacteria are summarized, before their ecophysiological features are reviewed. We describe the parameters that shape bryophyte communities and the global distribution of the species that compose them. Finally, we examine the threats facing bryophytes and review approaches designed to conserve them. Some aspects of bryophyte biology merited closer attention and are addressed in box essays. All technical terms are defined in a glossary." Soft cover, 6-7/8" x 9-3/4", 303 pp. ISBN 978-0-521-70073-3, 2009. $45.00 |

The Moss Flora of Mexico Aaron J. Sharp, Howard Crum, Patricia M. Eckel (editors). "Work on The Moss Flora of Mexico began in the early 1940s as an effort to determine the degree to which the floras of Mexico and the Southern Appalachian Mountains are similar. Vascular plant disjuncts between these areas had already been documented and explained, but little was known of similar distribution patterns in the mosses. ... The flora presented here was prepared by 32 persons active in floristic or monographic revisions of families and genera represented in Mexico. ... Studies by the collaborating authors have expanded the known ranges of the Mexican species, netted many species new to science, and placed many others in synonymy, thereby demonstrating phytogeographic ties to many parts of the world other than the Southern Appalachians." Manual of Vascular Plants of Northeastern United States and Adjacent Canada Henry A. Gleason and Arthur Cronquist. From the Foreword: "By mid-1999, the number of copies of the second edition of the Manual was very low and the book soon would be out of print. Because a true revision would have taken several years, we decided to prepare a "corrected edition," which would include corrections solicited from the botanical community." Please excuse the scanned image of the cover. This printing of Gleason and Cronquist does not have a striped cover. Only my scanner thinks it does. In reality, it is a plain old green cover but with a nice impression of leaves and flower of Liriodendron tulipifera. Hard cover, 6-1/4" x 9-1/4", 993 pp. ISBN 978-0-89327-365-1, 1991 (second edition, 7th printing, with corrections). (comments by a user of this book) $74.00 |

Late-glacial and Postglacial Vegetation Change in Southwestern New York State Norton G. Miller. "This report treats a problem that is historical in nature--vegetation change through time following deglaciation. The region involved is in western New York State where surfaces, according to available data, have been ice-free for at least 12,500 years, or longer southward toward the Pennsylvania border. Temperate broadleaf-deciduous or deciduous-coniferous forests now characterize the region. The history of their development as well as information on vegetation types that no longer exist in the area are major objectives in this investigation. The principal technique used is pollen analysis ... ." Soft cover, 8-1/2" x 11", 102 pp. 1973. $5.00 |

Postglacial Vegetational Changes Along an Elevational Gradient in The Adirondack Mountains (New York): A Study of Plant Macrofossils Stephen T. Jackson. "Plant macrofossils from post-glacial sediments of six sites document the history of vegetation patterns and species distributions along an elevational gradient (661 to 1320 m) in the High Peaks region the Adirondack Mountains (New York). The macrofossil data were also used to reconstruct local vegetation history at each of the six sites, to establish minimal arrival times for immigrating plant species, and to clarify the regional pollen record via identification of palynologically silent taxa and species-level determinations of palynologically indistinguishable taxa." The Black Flies (Simuliidae) of North America Peter H. Adler, Douglas C. Currie, and D. Monty Wood. "This work is a panoramic reference on the black flies of North America, here defined to include the continental United States, Canada, and Greenland. Our intent is to bring the black fly fauna of North America into the realm of familiarity held by butterflies, dragonflies, and other popular insects. ... The underlying theme of the book is accurate identification, the key to understanding the biology of black flies and ensuring their successful management. Our focal point, therefore, is the species. We are keenly aware of the difficulties of identification inherent in the family Simuliidae and the rampant misidentifications in the literature. We advocate an integrated approach to identification that involves morphology, cytology, distribution, and ecology, realizing that molecular and other innovative techniques should join, but not supplant, this approach."
