During the history of Alton, there have been four post offices: Alton, Alton Village, Birch Stream, and Gerry.

Briefly, the history of these four is as follows:
1. The former West Argyle post office was renamed on 30 January 1846 as Alton post office, which closed on 15 July 1913.
2. Alton Village post office opened on 1 July 1854 and closed on 26 October 1868.
3. Birch Stream post office opened on 3 February 1825 and closed on 6 November 1927.
4. Gerry post office opened on 11 September 1895 and closed on 31 March 1942.
