The earliest census records for Mount Desert Island that listed a Fernald as a “head of family” was the 1810 census of the town of Mount Desert, which reported a Tobias Fernald household with 2 males under 10, 1 male 26–45, and 1 female 26–45. (Note that these 4 did not all have to be Fernalds.) Subsequent years reported the following households:

1837 Mount Desert: Tobias (7)
1840 Great Cranberry, Cranberry Isles: Henry (3)
1840 Mount Desert: Eben (7)
