(updated 16 August 2019)

Welcome to the Canton Cemeteries web site. The purpose of this site is to provide basic cemetery information and pertinent notes so individual researchers will not have to “reinvent the wheel” by tracking down the same material that others have already found.

All information, especially source material, for inclusion in this web page should be sent to info@vfthomas.com or mailed to “Canton Cemeteries” at the address at the top of this page.

A little work by each of us will save a lot of work for all of us.
Thank you to the late Colby Davis of Canton, to Nelson Coolidge of Dixfield, and to Dana Morse for their help with the information on this web page.

History. Pine Grove Cemetery is composed of three parcels that were purchased over the course of nearly 75 years. The first purchase, of 2 acres (surveyed by William Thompson Esq.), from E. G. Harlow by the Pine Grove Cemetery Association is recorded in the Oxford County Registry of Deeds book 144, pages 320–321 (13 May 1858), and the property described as follows: Part of Range 5, Lot 21; 2 acres. Commencing on the easterly line of the county road leading from Canton Mills to Peru [now Route 108] at a stake and stones; then easterly at right angles with said road 16 rods to a stake and stones; then southerly on a parallel line with the line of said road 21 rods to a stake and stones; then westerly on a parallel with the northerly line aforesaid 16 rods to a stake and stones in the easterly line of said road; then northerly on the line of said road to the bound first named. Reserving the pine timber on said land to myself [E. G. Harlow] which I am to take off as soon as desired by said [Pine Grove Cemetery Association] corporation. I also covenant that neither myself, my heirs or assigns shall ever clear a strip of land on the south, east, and north sides of said 2-acre lot 4 rods wide, but am to have the right to take off any pine or hemlock lumber that may grow on said strip and any other wood which said corporation may wish removed, and said corporation is to have the privilege of making walks on said strips and otherwise clearing and ornamenting it.
A subsequent 1-acre addition to the south end of the cemetery on 10 August 1882 is recorded in book 264, page 341 as follows: Commencing at the southwest corner of the fence enclosing the [Pine Grove] cemetery; then easterly on the line of said fence 16 rods to the southeast [deed incorrectly reads southwest] corner of said cemetery lot; then southerly in a direct line with the fence on the east side of said cemetery 10 rods; then westerly on a parallel with the line first mentioned 16 rods to the line of the road; then northerly on the line of said road 10 rods to the bound first mentioned.
The final (to date) parcel was added at the north end of the cemetery on 18 May 1931 (400:378). It was sold to the association by H. Frank Richardson and Charles W. Walker. The description is as follows: Commencing at the northwest corner of land now owned by Pine Grove Cemetery Association, Inc.; then northerly on the east side of the Federal Road leading from Canton to Peru, to a monument at the Herdsdale line, so-called; then easterly 269 feet by said Herdsdale line to an iron post; then southerly to the northeast corner of land of Pine Grove Cemetery Association, Inc.; then westerly by the said cemetery line to the bound first mentioned.
Notes. Letter and number in braces following an entry indicate the section of the cemetery. The inscriptions on most stones are facing west. Therefore, around the middle of a sunny day provides the best contrast of letters/numbers for photography.
