Location. Schooner Head. UTM: 19T 0565662, 4910448; Lat./Long.: N 44°20′39.6″ x W 68°10′34.4″
Directions. From the intersection of Routes 3 and 102/198 at the north end of Mount Desert Island (just after you cross the bridge from Thompson Island), bear left on Route 3. Travel approximately 10.1 miles to a stop sign at the intersection on the left with Mount Desert Street. Turn left onto Mount Desert Street (Route 3) and continue 0.4–0.5 miles to another stop. Turn right at this stop sign, still following Route 3, and in 1.1–1.2 miles, bear left onto Schooner Head Road. Travel on Schooner Head Road for 2.4–2.5 miles to a stop sign, and turn left. This leads to Schooner Head overlook. The cemetery can be seen with binoculars from this overlook. Facing the water, look to your left. The cemetery is toward the right (east) portion of the cove formed by Schooner Head.
History. A deed (Hancock County Registry of Deeds book 1433, pages 400ff.) from John S. Baer and Helen Sue Baer to D. M. Burt and M. T. Webster reserves for the Baers “and their descendants, a right of way for passage by foot only from the Schooner Head Road to the cemetery”. The deed also states that Burt and Webster and “their heirs and assigns ... will not allow the cemetery to be used for any purpose other than as a burial ground” for the Baers and their descendants.
Notes. This cemetery was (1999) enclosed by a chain suspended between iron posts. Remains of an earlier iron fence were (1999) laying on the ground at the edge of the cemetery. By 2013, the cemetery was enclosed by a metal fence (fence detail).
