Location: South of Fernald Point Road. UTM: 19T 0554009, 4904470; Lat./Long.: N 44°17′29.3″ x W 68°19′22.9″

Directions: From the intersection of Routes 3 and 102/198 at the north end of Mount Desert Island, go straight ahead (south) onto Routes 102/198. In approximately 9.7–9.8 miles (5.4–5.5 miles of which are south of the traffic light at the intersection of Route 102/198 and Route 198), turn left onto Fernald Point Road. In about 0.2 miles the road rises and curves to the left. On the right in this curve is a paved drive that leads to the cemetery. The cemetery is on the right in approximately 0.1 miles.

History: This cemetery is on land that was part of a 100-acre parcel owned by William Gilley in 1808 according to the Salem Towne Jr. map. According to the 1939 book Traditions and Records of Southwest Harbor and Somesville by Mrs. Seth S. Thornton (Nellie Rebecca Carroll), “[n]eighbors settled near him and Mr. Gilley allowed graves of his family and friends to be made in a corner of his field, which in time was laid out as a cemetery and is known as the Gilley yard.” (p. 214)

Notes: An elaborate fence along one end of the cemetery and along part of the opposite end is falling down. Many large and nearly buried boulders along the side of the cemetery next to the road suggest some sort of stone wall at one time. Some gravestones are leaning or laying on the ground. In her 1939 book Traditions and Records of Southwest Harbor and Somesville, Mrs. Seth S. Thornton (Nellie Rebecca Carroll) reported (pp. 214 and 215) that buried in unmarked graves are William Gilley and wife Eunice (Bunker) Gilley; Henry Edmund Day, first wife Abigail (Gilley) Day, and second wife Mahala (Dolliver) Holmes; Mr. and Mrs. Elias Ginn; Capt. and Mrs. Samuel Rumill; Mrs. Jane Gross; Reuben Higgins and wife Susan and two daughters; and Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Somers and daughter Sally (Somers) (Clark) Gardiner. In addition to the above, ‥[t]here are many unmarked graves in this yard and no one now knows the names or history of many who lie here.” (p. 216)
