Other name(s): Lawler-Lurvey cemetery (Hancock County Registry of Deeds book 1337, pages 572–574), Carroll Hill Cemetery (current Southwest Harbor town records), Lurvey Cemetery (Thornton (1938))

Location: Along east side of Route 102, north of village of Southwest Harbor. UTM: 19T 0553524, 4905453; Lat./Long.: N 44°18′1.3″ x W 68°19′44.4″

Directions: From the intersection of Routes 3 and 102/198 at the north end of Mount Desert Island, go straight ahead (south) onto Routes 102/198. In approximately 9.1–9.2 miles (the last 4.9 miles of which are south of the traffic light at the intersection of Routes 102/198 and 198/233), the cemetery is on the left.

History: This cemetery is found in the 1881 Colby Atlas. Mrs. Seth Thornton, in her 1938 book Traditions and Records: Southwest Harbor and Somesville, reported that the “sum of $18 was paid for the [cemetery], which was at first called Lurvey cemetery and later changed to Evergreen to distinguish it from the old family lot” (p. 222). The “old family lot” is in Southwest Harbor and is called “Lurvey Burial Ground”.

Notes:
   1. No fence encloses this cemetery, but there is along the east (back) side of the cemetery a very large stone wall that was rebuilt in “1934 [by] the boys of the CCC camp, No. 158” (Thornton (1938), p. 226). They also “replaced the broken fence with one of neat cedar rails” (p. 226). Remnants of many posts along the south line and a few rails can still be found (2010) along the north and south sides of the cemetery. Today this cemetery is maintained by the town of Southwest Harbor.
   2. The 29 September 1977 deed (1337:572–574) for the abutting parcel to the south of the cemetery gave the boundary of the southern line of the cemetery as “[b]eginning at a wood post on the easterly side of Maine State Route #102 at the southwest corner of the Lawler-Luurvey cemetery, so-called; then S 76°20′ E and always following the southerly line of said cemetery, 164.72 feet, more or less, to a wooden post at the southeast corner of said cemetery”.
