Directions. From the intersection of Routes 3 and 102/198 at the north end of Mount Desert Island (just after you cross the bridge from Thompson Island), bear left on Route 3. In 4.6–4.7 miles, turn right onto Norway Drive. Travel 1.2–1.3 miles to a stop sign at the intersection of Norway Drive and Crooked Road. Turn right onto Crooked Road, and the cemetery is in the pasture on the left in approximately 0.1 miles.

History: This cemetery is called the Emery Cemetery on the 1981 7.5′ Salsbury [sic] Cove topographic map, but the earliest graves belong to the Thompson family.
The current deed (5374:168–175; 9 February 2010) that conveyed land surrounding the Emery Cemetery said, “Excepted from this conveyance and not hereby conveying is a certain cemetery lot and right of way thereto.” (Reference is made to 295:181.)
In 295:181–184 (7 November 1895), a deed conveying land from John W. Somes to George E. Soper, the cemetery now known as the Emery Cemetery is referenced as follows: “Expressly excepting and reserving however from the first lot above described as conveyed, to the grantor, his heirs and assigns, and to the heirs of the late Joel Emery, Senior, to the heirs of the late Cornelius Thompson, and to all other persons having rights in connection therewith or interests therein, the right to use and maintain for a grave yard the lot situated in the field on said homestead farm, now enclosed and used for a grave-yard, it being the lot sixty-six, by ninety six feet, more or less, in dimensions: a right of way for all purposes of such a way, appurtenant to said grave-yard lot and extending from the southeast corner of said grave yard lot in a direct line to said town road: said way is to be used in common by the grantor, his heirs and assigns[,] the grantee, his heirs and assigns, and all other persons having similar rights.”

Notes: During the summer of 1999, major improvements were made to this cemetery—brush was cleared, fallen gravestones were propped up when possible, and a fence was repaired to protect both the cemetery and the remains of an old iron fence.
